Fucoidan Health News July: What is Immunology by The American Association of Immunologists (AAI)?
What is Immunology by The American Association of Immunologists (AAI)?
Following the Covid-19 pandemic, “IMMUNITY” has become more and more important. Did you know there is an international conference on immunity? In May 2022, Umi no Shizuku Fucoidan participated in The American Association of Immunologists 2022 and published a research paper on Fucoidan. This month’s Health News introduces you to The American Association of Immunologists (AAI).
First of all, what is “Immunology” in AAI?
The conference of AAI specializes in immunity and is held in the US every May; immunological researchers and companies gather together from all over the world. Although the immunity field is highly specialized, many researchers and businesses gathered from 35 countries in Portland, Oregon this year. - Number of participants: Approx. 3,200 (usually approx. 4,000, but due to the influence of Covid-19 numbers fell)
- Number of published research papers: Approx. 1,600
- Number of immune-related companies exhibitors: Approx. 100
What types of companies participated?
Among Japanese companies, SONY and KEYENCE each had an exhibition space. SONY promoted a device that analyzes immune cells in detail. While KEYENCE was initially a company that handled precision machinery such as sensors and measuring instruments, they were promoting an ultra-high performance microscope for analyzing immune cells at AAI. Both companies are well-known conglomerates in Japan, but it was surprising to see their developments in the field of immunity. In addition, many American companies dealing with antibody cells and antigen cells also exhibited at the conference. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, terms such as “antigen test” and “antibody test ” have been used more, which is what antigen and antibody means.
What type of research content do they have?
Japanese researchers working at American universities and research institutes, and professors at Japanese universities visited the venue in Portland to present their research papers. Immune researchers presented their research papers in several convention rooms over the course of 4 days. All research presentations were related to immunity, such as “How immunity works on Ebola” or “How immunity works on Influenza.” Many studies on Covid-19 were also presented. Since the Covid-19 pandemic after 2020, the importance of immunity has been recognized internationally once again.
Research presentation by Umi no Shizuku Fucoidan
We, Kamerycah inc., a manufacturer and distributor of Umi no Shizuku Fucoidan, have also announced new research on fucoidan and immunity. The study was conducted in collaboration with Professor Yoshiyuki Miyazaki, responsible for food immunological function analysis at Kyushu University, and the director of the NPO Fucoidan Research Institute.
The study showed that Okinawa mozuku fucoidan and Mekabu fucoidan, which are components of Umi no Shizuku Fucoidan, helped maintain balance in immune cells and prevented them from over-activating.
The study also showed that high molecular weight fucoidan is more effective in supporting the immune system than low molecular weight fucoidan because low molecular weight fucoidan weakens the immune support function. Fucoidan originally existed in nature in the form of a high molecular state to which many sugars are bound. It is important that fucoidan is in the ‘high molecular weight’ state, as low molecular weights can alter the properties of Fucoidan itself, making it difficult for it to be truly effective.
Since Umi no Shizuku Fucoidan uses only high-molecular weight fucoidan, its immune supporting effects may be higher than low-molecular weight fucoidan products.
Umi no Shizuku Fucoidan is continuing joint research with NPO Fucoidan Research Institute and has been regularly publishing research papers at the AAI since 2012. We will continue to manufacture evidence-based products and perform quality control so that everyone can use fucoidan products with a peace of mind.
